What ChatGPT ads are
ChatGPT ads are paid placements that OpenAI shows below ChatGPT’s answers to people on the Free and Go plans. They are labeled as ads, kept separate from the answer, and matched to what the person is talking about in that conversation.
OpenAI started testing ads in the United States on February 9, 2026. After a pilot that ran from February through April, it opened a beta self-serve Ads Manager on May 5, 2026 at ads.openai.com, added cost-per-click (CPC) bidding next to the original cost-per-impression (CPM) buying, and launched conversion measurement. Big brands can also buy through agency partners such as Dentsu, Omnicom, Publicis and WPP. For a home-service company, the self-serve Ads Manager is the realistic way in, either on your own or through a partner like us.
OpenAI is clear that the platform is still in beta. Delivery systems, ad formats, buying options and measurement are all still changing, and OpenAI says it doesn’t yet have performance benchmarks across advertisers or industries. That’s the honest starting point for anyone who tells you what ChatGPT ads “will” do for your company.
Where the ads show and what they look like
A ChatGPT ad shows up as one ad unit below a ChatGPT response. It never appears inside the answer text. OpenAI is also testing a multi-image ad format that shows while ChatGPT generates an image.
Each ad has six parts:
| Ad part | What it is | What it means for a contractor |
|---|---|---|
| Advertiser name | Your Brand Name from Ads Manager | Use the name on your trucks and your Google Business Profile |
| Favicon | Your logo | A clean, readable logo at a small size |
| Title | The headline | Say the job and the benefit, like “Same-day water heater replacement” |
| Copy | The description | Add new facts: service area, licensing, financing, warranty |
| Image | The creative | A real job photo beats stock |
| Landing page | Where the click goes | A page about that exact service, never your homepage |
People who see your ad can hide it, report it, open “About this ad” to see why it showed, or use Ask ChatGPT to ask questions about it. That last one matters: a homeowner can ask ChatGPT about your offer right there. Ads that make vague or inflated claims don’t hold up well when someone can question them on the spot.
OpenAI also states that an ad is not an endorsement. Seeing your ad doesn’t mean OpenAI recommends your company.
Who sees ChatGPT ads
Only people on ChatGPT’s Free and Go plans see ads. OpenAI doesn’t show ads to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu accounts, or to accounts it identifies as belonging to someone under 18.
A few more limits shape who you can reach:
- No ads in Temporary Chats.
- No ads near sensitive topics, including personal health, mental health and politics. A conversation about mold making someone sick may not be eligible, even if the person also needs remediation.
- An ad-free option exists. Free users can switch to an ads-free mode with lower usage limits.
- Ads personalization is optional. When it’s on, ChatGPT can use select signals from past chats and memory. When it’s off, ads still match the current conversation.
For a contractor, that still leaves a large audience of homeowners, but not every ChatGPT user. That’s one reason we never treat ChatGPT ads as a replacement for getting named in ChatGPT’s actual answers, which reaches paid-plan users too. More on that below.
How ChatGPT picks which ad to show
ChatGPT ads aren’t keyword ads. OpenAI’s system picks ads based on expected relevance and outcomes, using the context and intent of the current conversation, your landing page, title, copy, your context hints and targeting choices, and, when it’s turned on, ads personalization.
When more than one ad is eligible, OpenAI weighs relevance and bids together in a relevance-weighted, second-price auction. In plain English: a more relevant ad can beat a bigger bid, and you usually don’t pay your full maximum.
Context hints, explained for contractors
Context hints are short phrases you add at the ad-group level to tell OpenAI when your ad is relevant. OpenAI suggests three angles: what you offer, who it helps and when it’s useful. OpenAI’s own example for a local plumber reads like real business detail, not a keyword list: after-hours residential plumbing in a named city, with the service-call fee spelled out.
Three rules matter most:
- Hints are not exact-match keywords. People don’t have to use your words for the ad to be relevant.
- Hints are not targeting rules. “Show this only to people in Tacoma” does nothing. Location goes in the campaign’s location settings.
- Hints must be accurate. Update them when your prices, service area or offers change.
Here’s how we’d write hints for different trades. These are examples of the format, not a script; real hints use your real details.
| Trade | Weak hint | Stronger hint |
|---|---|---|
| Roofing | roofing | Storm damage roof repair and insurance claim help for homeowners in [city] |
| HVAC | hvac company | Heat pump installs for older homes switching off oil or electric baseboard heat |
| Plumbing | plumber | Same-day tank and tankless water heater replacement for homeowners in [county] |
| Remodeling | remodeler | Full kitchen remodels for homeowners who want one company to handle design, permits and build |
| Water damage | restoration | 24/7 water extraction and drying after burst pipes, working directly with insurance |
| Foundation repair | foundation | Crack and settling repair for homes with sticking doors or sloping floors |
| Basement waterproofing | waterproofing | Interior drainage and sump pump systems for basements that flood in heavy rain |
| Epoxy floors | epoxy | Garage floor coatings that resist hot-tire peeling, installed in one or two days |
| Gutters | gutters | Seamless gutter replacement and guards for homes with tall trees |
Location targeting
You pick where ads can run at the campaign level. Besides countries, OpenAI supports states or regions, cities, markets and postal codes where available. For a contractor, that means you can match a campaign to your real service area instead of paying for clicks three counties away. One detail from OpenAI’s help: to run only in the United States, you have to include the United States. Excluding other countries alone doesn’t do it.
Why it matters for home-service companies
A homeowner in a ChatGPT conversation has often done more work than someone typing two words into Google. They’ve described the problem, asked what’s causing it, asked what it might cost and asked what to look for in a contractor. An ad that shows up at that moment, for the right service in the right area, reaches someone who is close to picking up the phone.
Look at how that plays out by trade:
- Roofing: “We had hail last night and there’s a stain on the ceiling. Do I call the insurance company or a roofer first?”
- HVAC: “Is a heat pump worth it in the Pacific Northwest, and what size do I need for 2,000 square feet?”
- Plumbing: “My water heater is leaking from the bottom. Can it be fixed or do I need a new one?”
- Restoration: “A pipe burst in the basement. What do I do in the next hour?”
- Foundation and waterproofing: “There’s a crack in my basement wall and water comes in when it rains. How serious is this?”
Each of those is a homeowner describing a job. That’s the moment your ad can show.
It’s also early. OpenAI’s own FAQ calls the platform “in the early stages of scaling,” and most local contractors haven’t touched it. There’s room to learn what works for your trade before the channel gets crowded.
Is it right for you yet?
ChatGPT ads make the most sense when the basics are already working. Ads only amplify what’s already there, so we’ll tell you straight if you should fix something else first.
Use this checklist:
- Tracking is in place. Call tracking and form tracking, so you can tie a booked job to a source.
- A landing page per service. A page about that exact job, with your phone number, service area and a short form.
- Someone answers the phone. A click that reaches voicemail is wasted spend.
- Jobs are worth a test. Higher-ticket work (roof replacement, HVAC systems, remodels, foundation repair, restoration) can pay for a test with one or two booked jobs.
- A strong Google Business Profile. Homeowners who see your ad will often check your reviews before they call.
- Patience for a learning period. A few days isn’t a test.
How we think about fit by trade:
| Trade | Why it can fit | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Roofing | Big tickets; homeowners research storm damage and insurance | Storm surges bring out-of-area competition |
| HVAC | Replacements and heat pumps involve lots of questions | Emergency “no heat” calls still lean toward Google and Maps |
| Plumbing | Water heaters and repipes are research-heavy | Pure emergencies are often a fast phone search |
| Remodeling | Long research phase, high value | Longer sales cycle, so judge over months, not weeks |
| Restoration / water damage | Urgent and high value | Must answer 24/7 or the click is lost |
| Mold remediation | High value | Health-related chats may not be eligible for ads |
| Foundation repair / basement waterproofing | High value, lots of “how serious is this?” questions | Needs a page that explains inspections clearly |
| Concrete and epoxy floors | Visual, comparison-heavy | Smaller tickets need tighter cost control |
| Gutters | Simple jobs | Lower ticket; test only with a tight budget |
What it takes to run ChatGPT ads
Running ChatGPT ads takes an Ads Manager account, billing, an approved ad, a tracked landing page and a campaign built around one goal. Here’s what’s involved, so you know what we handle.
The account. You sign up at ads.openai.com with an OpenAI login. Ads Manager uses three names: Account Name (internal), Brand Name (the public name shown with your ads) and Legal Name (for billing and verification). Changing the Brand Name later triggers a review and pauses ads until it’s approved. Billing must be set up, and accounts may need verification before ads serve. Team access comes in three roles: Admin, Member and Viewer. When we manage your ads, the account stays in your business’s name, and we work in it as a user you invite.
The structure. Every campaign follows the same three levels:
| Level | What it holds | Contractor example |
|---|---|---|
| Campaign | Objective, budget, dates, locations, platforms | “Water heaters – Clark County – Clicks” |
| Ad group | One theme or customer need, plus context hints | Emergency replacement vs. planned tankless upgrade |
| Ad | Title, copy, image and landing page | Three to five distinct versions per ad group |
OpenAI’s own example uses a plumbing company with separate ad groups for emergency repairs and preventive maintenance. Same business, different needs, different messages and landing pages.
The objective. You choose Views (billed per 1,000 impressions), Clicks (billed per valid click) or Conversions (the system aims for a conversion event you set up, billed by clicks or impressions, never per conversion). Most contractor tests start on Clicks.
The budget. You choose a daily budget or a campaign-total budget. OpenAI’s minimum daily budget is 25 USD. A daily budget is an average across the week, so any single day can run up to twice your daily amount. Pricing details live in our ChatGPT ads cost guide.
Review. Ads must pass review before they serve. Your ad, image and landing page all have to follow OpenAI’s ad policies, and ads can be rejected if they’re misleading or inconsistent.
Your website has to let OpenAI in. OpenAI says landing pages must not block its user agents OAI-AdsBot and OAI-SearchBot. Some security plugins and firewalls block unfamiliar bots by default. We check this before launch, because a blocked landing page can stop an ad from running.
How we measure ChatGPT ads
We measure ChatGPT ads by booked jobs, not clicks. OpenAI’s reports show impressions, clicks, spend, click-through rate, average CPC, average CPM and conversions. That tells you about the ad. It doesn’t tell you whether the phone rang with a real job.
Our tracking setup:
- UTM tags on every landing page link. OpenAI says these carry through on ad clicks, so ChatGPT traffic shows up separately in Google Analytics 4.
- The OpenAI Pixel on your site, with the lead events that matter: form submitted, call button tapped. OpenAI adds a click reference called oppref to the landing page URL, and the pixel stores it so it can match later conversions.
- The Conversions API where it makes sense, using the same event ID as the pixel so a lead isn’t counted twice.
- Call tracking. Most contractor leads are phone calls, and phone calls are where ad platforms lose track. A tracking number on the landing page ties calls back to ChatGPT.
- Your booked jobs. We match leads to jobs in your CRM or calendar, so the final number is cost per booked job.
A few things to expect:
- Impressions, clicks and CTR refresh about every 15 minutes. Spend can lag 7 to 8 hours, so a $0 spend early in the day doesn’t mean nothing was charged.
- OpenAI’s numbers and Google Analytics won’t always match. OpenAI lists the reasons: different attribution windows, time zones, consent and browser conditions, and modeled conversions. A gap isn’t automatically an error.
- OpenAI also offers a beta Google Analytics 4 connection for comparing attribution. It’s early-access through an OpenAI account manager, so we don’t count on it.

How we run ChatGPT ads
We run ChatGPT ads as a measured test first and scale only what books jobs. Here’s the process.
- Fit check. We look at your trade, your markets, your landing pages and your current lead costs, and tell you whether to test now or wait.
- Tracking first. Call tracking, form tracking, UTMs and the OpenAI Pixel. If we can’t measure it, we don’t spend on it.
- One service, one market. We start with the job you most want more of, in a tight service area set by city or postal code.
- Write for the conversation. We write context hints from your real details, then several distinct ads per ad group. OpenAI recommends a varied set of ads so its system can find more places your ad fits.
- Build a matching landing page. If the ad is about storm damage, the page is about storm damage, with insurance info, your license and a phone number at the top.
- Start small and watch closely. A modest daily budget, checked daily for spend, conversation fit and lead quality.
- Judge on booked jobs. We compare cost per booked job against your Google Ads, Local Services Ads and SEO, and tell you plainly whether to scale it, change it or stop.
We report in plain English: what you spent, what calls and forms came in, which ones booked, and what we’re changing next.
ChatGPT ads vs. Google Ads vs. Local Services Ads
ChatGPT ads work alongside your Google channels, not instead of them. Each one reaches homeowners at a different moment.
| Google Ads | Google Local Services Ads | ChatGPT Ads | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How ads are matched | Keywords people type | Your service categories and service area | The conversation, guided by your context hints |
| Where they show | Google search results | The top of Google search, with Google’s badge | Below ChatGPT’s answers |
| How you pay | Mostly per click | Per lead | Per 1,000 views or per click |
| Maturity | Proven and competitive | Proven for home services | New and still in beta |
| Best use today | A core lead source | A core lead source | A measured test alongside your core channels |
Google Ads catches people searching right now, like “emergency plumber near me.” Local Services Ads put your reviews and Google’s badge at the top of the page. ChatGPT ads reach people who are still describing the problem and deciding what to do. Learn more about Google Ads Management →

Ads vs. getting recommended for free
ChatGPT ads are paid placements. Getting your business named in the answer itself is a different job, and you can’t buy it. OpenAI says ads don’t influence ChatGPT’s answers, run on separate systems, and give advertisers no way to shape, rank or change responses.
What gets you named in the answer is earned: a website ChatGPT’s search crawler can reach, a complete Google Business Profile, real reviews that describe your work, consistent listings, and real mentions from trade associations, suppliers and local news. That also reaches Plus and Pro users, who never see ads. Our guide on how to get recommended by ChatGPT walks through it step by step. Learn more about AI SEO for Contractors →
The strongest position is both: named in the answer and showing an ad below it.
What we won’t do
- Promise results. OpenAI hasn’t published benchmarks, and nobody can guarantee clicks, calls or placement in a beta platform.
- Write ads that overpromise. No fake urgency, no claims you can’t back up. Homeowners can ask ChatGPT about your ad, and OpenAI reviews every ad.
- Spend before tracking works. No tracking, no launch.
- Send clicks to your homepage. Every ad gets a page about the job it’s selling.
- Keep spending on a test that isn’t booking jobs. If the numbers don’t work after a fair test, we’ll tell you to pause.
Key terms
- Ads Manager (Beta): OpenAI’s self-serve tool at ads.openai.com for creating campaigns, paying and reading reports.
- Context hint: A short phrase at the ad-group level that describes what you offer, who it helps and when. Not a keyword, not a targeting rule.
- CPC (cost per click): You pay for each valid click. The “Clicks” objective.
- CPM (cost per mille): You pay per 1,000 impressions. The “Views” objective.
- oCPC / oCPM: Conversion-optimized bidding. The system aims for a conversion, but you’re billed per click or per impression.
- Second-price auction: You usually pay just enough to win, not your full maximum bid.
- OpenAI Pixel / Conversions API: The two ways to send conversion events, like a form fill, back to Ads Manager.
- oppref: OpenAI’s click reference added to your landing page URL, used to match conversions to clicks.
- OAI-AdsBot / OAI-SearchBot: OpenAI’s crawlers. Your landing pages must not block them.
- Cost per booked job: Total ad spend divided by booked jobs from those ads. The number we judge every test on.
Guides for Contractors
Frequently asked questions
Can I advertise my contracting business on ChatGPT?
Yes. OpenAI opened a beta self-serve Ads Manager in May 2026, and businesses can sign up at ads.openai.com or work through a partner like us. Self-serve access depends on your country, and ads must pass review before they run.
Do ChatGPT ads change what ChatGPT recommends?
No. OpenAI says ads don’t influence ChatGPT’s answers and are shown separately with a label. Paying for ads doesn’t buy a mention in the answer.
Who sees ChatGPT ads?
People on the Free and Go plans. OpenAI doesn’t show ads to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu accounts, to accounts identified as under 18, or in Temporary Chats.
Are ChatGPT ads keyword-based?
No. Ads are matched to the conversation. You add context hints that describe when your ad is relevant, but OpenAI says they aren’t exact-match keywords and don’t guarantee delivery.
Can ChatGPT ads target my service area?
Yes. Besides countries, OpenAI supports states or regions, cities, markets and postal codes where available. Location is set in the campaign, not in your context hints.
How much do ChatGPT ads cost?
Ads are sold by auction, by impressions or by clicks, and the minimum daily budget is 25 USD. For click campaigns, OpenAI recommends starting with a maximum bid of $3 to $5 per click. We quote management case by case. See our cost guide for the details.
Can advertisers see what people type into ChatGPT?
No. OpenAI says advertisers don’t get access to chats, chat history, memories or personal details. Advertisers see combined performance numbers, like views and clicks.
How do I know if ChatGPT ads are working?
Track every call and form with UTMs, the OpenAI Pixel and call tracking, then divide spend by booked jobs. Compare that cost per booked job with your other channels.
Are ChatGPT ads better than Google Ads?
Not better, different. Google Ads and Local Services Ads are proven lead sources for contractors. ChatGPT ads are worth testing alongside them, judged on cost per booked job.
